The Ultimate Safety Protocol When Working With Pallet Racking Systems

Posted on: 4 March 2018

If you have a warehouse, a pallet racking system is an extremely important resource you'll use often. It's critical to exercise extreme caution when using these systems, though, as product damage and accidents could happen if you're not careful. Make sure these incidents don't happen in your warehouse by following this safety protocol.

Plan for Collisions

In a warehouse, forklifts and other heavy machinery are constantly moving around. One wrong move could send these machines flying into your pallet racking systems, causing massive destruction and severe accidents. That's why you need to plan for these collisions, ever before they occur.

End-aisle guards should be set up all around your warehouse. They are made from durable steel, and will prevent your systems from toppling over should heavy machinery collide into them accidentally. Column protectors should also be used to make your pallet racking systems more structurally sound.

Load Correctly

Working in a warehouse, you probably have a lot of responsibilities. As such, it's sometimes instinctive to place pallets onto racks without thinking things through. You need to avoid these tendencies and take a more calculated effort for loading pallets, though. This will ensure pallets don't slip and topple over.

For every pallet, make sure it's loaded evenly on the rack and load beams. Take your time, making sure there are no obstructions or obstacles in your way. You also need to make sure you don't put too much weight on the rack, which you can do if you know what the rack's maximum loading capacity is.

Have Damaged Racks Replaced

Even though pallet racking systems are fairly durable and designed to hold a lot of weight, they will not last forever. There will come a point in time when they need to be replaced, to protect your pallets and prevent significant injuries from occurring.

Go through your warehouse and inspect every one of your pallet racks. Make sure they are level and keep an eye out for rust and corrosion. You also want to make sure they are structurally sound. If you notice there are any glaring issues with your racking systems, have them replaced immediately. You wouldn't want to put your employees at risk, after all.

Pallet racking systems are so helpful regarding providing secure and effective storage for your pallets. As long as you use them correctly and maintain them often over the years, you shouldn't experience catastrophic problems.
